Why Newmarket patients come to Aurora

Families who look for braces in Newmarket often think first about the treatment, then realise the real commitment is the schedule. Braces usually need an adjustment every 4 to 12 weeks, often for one to two years. That is a lot of trips, so it helps when appointments can happen after school. We are open until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

Other practical points add up over that many visits: free parking at the door, one front desk that bills your insurance directly, and a team that speaks English, Farsi, Tamil and Tagalog for parents who would like to talk through the plan in another language. Brothers and sisters can also keep their regular checkups at the same clinic.

Looking for an orthodontist in Newmarket? Who provides care here

In Ontario, "orthodontist" is a title for dentists registered with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario as specialists in orthodontics. At our clinic, Dr. Farhad Sobouti, DDS, MSc (Orthodontics), FRCDC, provides our orthodontic treatment. You can look up any dentist's registration on the RCDSO public register, and you are always welcome to ask us about training before you start.

If a case is better handled in another office, we will explain why and talk through the referral.

Braces choices for kids, teens and adults

We offer traditional metal braces, ceramic braces that blend with the teeth, and clear aligners. Metal braces suit a wide range of cases. Ceramic braces work the same way and are less noticeable, which many adults prefer. Aligners are removable trays that need about 22 hours of wear a day. After the assessment, Dr. Sobouti explains which choice fits the bite, the age and the routine of the person wearing them.

What a year in braces looks like

The assessment includes an exam, photos and X-rays. Placing the braces is the longest visit and needs no freezing. After that, adjustment visits are usually short. Teeth may ache for a few days after each one, and soft food helps.

  • Brush after meals and use floss threaders around the wire
  • Skip hard and sticky foods such as ice, caramel and popcorn
  • Wear a mouthguard for hockey, soccer and other contact sports
  • Keep wearing retainers as directed once the braces come off

Questions

Is Dr. Sobouti an orthodontist?

Dr. Farhad Sobouti, DDS, MSc (Orthodontics), FRCDC, provides our orthodontic treatment, and his training includes a master's degree in orthodontics. You can see how he is registered on the RCDSO public register at rcdso.org, and you can ask him about his training at your assessment.

How often will we drive from Newmarket during braces?

Usually every 4 to 12 weeks for adjustments, plus a few longer visits at the start and end. Dr. Sobouti will give you an expected schedule after the assessment, so you can plan around school and work.

Can my teenager take the bus from Newmarket on their own?

Many teens do use transit for short visits. Viva and YRT run along Yonge Street, and YRT routes run on Wellington Street East. Check yrt.ca for the trip, and let us know if a parent will join by phone for any decisions.

What age should my child be checked for braces?

There is no single age. Your dentist watches how the adult teeth come in at regular checkups and will suggest an assessment if a problem is developing. A few bite problems respond better when treatment starts during growth.

Does insurance or the CDCP cover braces?

Some private plans include orthodontics, often with a lifetime maximum. When we last checked, Canada.ca listed orthodontic services as not available under the CDCP, so check there for updates. We can send a predetermination and give you a written estimate, including retainers, first.

What if a bracket breaks between visits?

Cover any sharp wire with orthodontic wax and call us. A loose bracket is rarely urgent, and we will tell you whether to come in early or wait for your next adjustment.
