Student Dental Program in Aurora

Between tuition, rent and textbooks, dental care is easy to put off. Aurora Gateway Dental has a student program that lowers costs, and we bill student plans directly.

The short answer

If you have a student dental plan through your college or university, Aurora Gateway Dental in Aurora bills it directly, so you pay only your share. If you have no plan, ask about our student program, which lowers costs on care. Details are available on request, and you get a written estimate before any treatment.

Our student program

Our clinic offers a student program that lowers the cost of dental care for students. Who it applies to and how it works can change, so we don't list the details here. Ask us when you call or send a request, and our team will explain whether it fits your situation.

Whatever coverage you have, the process stays the same. Your dentist examines your teeth, explains what they see, and you get a written estimate before any treatment begins. We'll explain your payment options before treatment, too.

How a student dental plan usually works

Many colleges and universities in Ontario offer a health and dental plan through the student union or student association. The fee is often added to your student fees each year. Some plans let you opt out if you already have coverage through a parent or spouse. The deadlines for opting out are set by each school.

Student plans work like other insurance. They usually pay a share of each service and have yearly limits. Common things to check in your plan booklet are:

  • Which services are covered, such as exams, cleanings, X-rays and fillings
  • What share the plan pays for each type of service
  • The yearly maximum and when the plan year starts and ends
  • Whether you must use a certain network of dentists to get the full benefit
  • How long coverage lasts after you graduate or leave school

Still on a parent's plan?

Many workplace plans cover a plan holder's children while they are full-time students, up to an age set by the plan. If you think you are still covered, ask your parent to check their plan booklet or call the insurer. Bring the plan holder's name, date of birth and plan details to your visit, and we can bill the plan directly.

If you have both a parent's plan and a student plan, tell us about both. We submit to each plan in the proper order, so neither one is missed.

Student plans and the CDCP

Some students wonder whether they can use the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) instead. Canada.ca says you don't qualify if you have access to dental coverage through a student organization, a workplace, a parent's plan or a plan you bought. That applies even if you never use the coverage. The rules are detailed, so check the official "Do you qualify" page for your own case.

If you truly have no dental coverage, filed a tax return and meet the income rules, the CDCP may be an option. We accept the CDCP and bill Sun Life directly.

Finding a dentist for students near campus or home

Dental visits should be easy to fit around classes. We stay open until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and we see patients on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reading week or the summer break can also be a good time to book, when timetables are lighter.

If you are home in Aurora for the holidays, it can make sense to book a checkup then. Aurora GO is on the Barrie line, and YRT routes run along Wellington Street East to our plaza; check yrt.ca for current stops.

Getting the most from a small budget

The least costly filling is the one you never need, which is why prevention matters so much on a student budget. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily and go easy on sugary drinks during long study nights.

Regular checkups let your dentist catch small problems before they grow. Late teens and early twenties are also when wisdom teeth often start to show on X-rays. Your dentist can tell you whether they should simply be watched. If you need treatment, ask whether the work can be planned to fit your plan year.

Questions

Who can use your student program?

Ask us for details. Our team will explain how the program works and whether it applies to you. We don't post the rules online because they can change.

Do you bill student union dental plans?

Yes. Student plans are billed directly, like any other insurance plan. Bring your plan card or the policy details from your student union website.

Can I use the student program and my student plan together?

Ask our team. How the program fits with insurance can depend on your plan. We'll explain the options and show your share in a written estimate.

I'm only home from school for the summer. Can I see a student dentist in Aurora for one visit?

Yes. A checkup and cleaning during a break from school is a good way to stay on track. If we find something that needs treatment, we'll explain the timing and whether it can wait until your next trip back.

My student plan ends when I graduate. What should I do?

Check your plan booklet for the exact end date and use any remaining coverage for checkups before then. After that, you may have coverage through a new job, or you may be able to apply for the CDCP if you have no access to dental insurance.

Do you see international students?

Yes. Some international student health plans include dental care and some don't, so check yours. If you have no dental coverage, ask about our student program.
