Dental Insurance and Payment in Aurora
Knowing what you will pay before treatment makes decisions easier. Here is how Aurora Gateway Dental in Aurora handles insurance claims, estimates and payment.
The short answer
Aurora Gateway Dental in Aurora bills all dental insurance plans directly, as well as the Canadian Dental Care Plan and the Interim Federal Health Program. After your exam, you get a written estimate that shows your expected share. For larger treatment, we can send a predetermination to your insurer first, so you know what the plan expects to pay.

Direct billing for every insurance plan
We bill all dental insurance plans directly. We send the claim to your insurer, and the plan pays its portion to us. You pay the part your plan does not cover.
To set this up, give us your plan details when you request a visit. If you are covered by two plans, such as your own and your spouse's, tell us about both. We send the claims in the right order so each plan can do its part.
- Insurance company name
- Group or policy number and your certificate or member ID
- Plan holder's name and date of birth, if the plan is through a spouse or parent
How dental fees are set in Ontario
The Ontario Dental Association publishes a Suggested Fee Guide every year. It lists dental services by code with a suggested fee for each. Dentists are not required to follow it. Each office sets its own fees based on things like time, materials, lab work, staff and overhead.
Many insurers base their coverage on the guide's codes and fees. Some pay based on a guide from a year or more ago. That is why your plan may pay a different amount from your bill. The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario says your dentist must tell you if a fee is above the guide.
A written estimate before treatment
Your dentist first examines your teeth and talks through your options. Then we give you a written estimate before any treatment starts. It lists each step, any lab or material costs, and what your plan is likely to pay. For a longer plan, it may show a low and high range.
Parisa, our Treatment and Financial Coordinator, can go through the estimate with you. If your plan needs to change during a visit, we explain the new cost and ask for your agreement before going on.
Predeterminations: checking with your plan first
A predetermination is a request we send to your insurer before treatment. The insurer replies with what it expects to pay. This is most useful for crowns, root canals, dentures and other larger work.
A predetermination is not a promise of payment. Your plan's limits and yearly maximums still apply when the claim is made. The CDCP calls this step preauthorization, and for some services it is required.
CDCP and IFHP at our clinic
We accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan for adults and children. CDCP patients are not asked to pay the full cost upfront. You pay your co-payment, plus any fee above the CDCP fee that we have shown you in writing. Our CDCP guide explains eligibility and co-payment levels.
We also accept the Interim Federal Health Program for eligible refugees and asylum claimants. Since May 2026, IFHP dental care has a 30% co-payment. Our refugee dental services guide explains who is covered and what to bring.
No insurance? Ask about our in-house plan
If you have no dental benefits, ask about our in-house dental plan and student program. Our team can explain how they work and whether either one suits your needs.
Whichever option you use, you still get a written estimate before any treatment, so you can see your share before you decide.
Paying your share
Your written estimate shows the amount you are likely to owe. We'll explain your payment options before treatment. Our front desk can answer payment questions when you call.
Keep your receipts. If your insurer pays less than expected, we can help you read the explanation of benefits and see why.

Questions
Do you bill my insurance directly?
Yes. We bill all dental insurance plans directly. You pay only the part your plan does not cover.
Why did my plan pay less than my bill?
Many plans base coverage on the ODA fee guide, sometimes an older year. Plans also have percentages and yearly limits. Your written estimate and predetermination help you see this before treatment.
Can you tell me the price of a treatment over the phone?
We do not quote prices before an exam. The cost depends on what your dentist finds and what you choose. After the exam, you get a written estimate.
How long does a predetermination take?
It depends on your insurer. We send it after your exam, and we let you know when the reply comes in. You can wait for it before booking treatment.
Can I use two insurance plans?
Yes. Tell us about both plans. We send the claims in the right order so each plan pays its share.
I don't have dental insurance. What can I do?
Check whether you qualify for the CDCP. You can also ask about our in-house dental plan and student program. Either way, we give you a written estimate first.
Will the cost change once treatment starts?
It can if your dentist finds something new. If that happens, we explain the change and ask for your agreement before we go on.
