Why Newmarket patients come to Aurora

Most people who ask about teeth whitening in Newmarket have a date in mind: a wedding, a graduation, a new job or family photos by the water at Fairy Lake. Whitening goes more smoothly when it is planned backward from that date, with time for a checkup, any needed care, and a little room in case your teeth feel sensitive. Our Tuesday and Thursday evening hours, until 7 p.m., make it easier to fit the first visit around work.

Take-home trays also keep the number of trips low. After your trays are made and you have been shown how to use them, most of the whitening happens at home in Newmarket. You come back to check the shade. Parking is free at the door, and we will explain your payment options before you begin.

How Newmarket teeth whitening is planned here

Whitening starts with an exam, not with the gel. Your dentist checks for cavities, worn enamel, gum recession and old fillings on your front teeth. Each of these changes the plan. A cavity needs treatment first, exposed roots can be extra sensitive, and fillings will not lighten with the teeth around them.

We also record your starting shade, so you can compare honestly at the end.

In-office or take-home: thinking about your schedule

In-office whitening is done in one appointment, with your gums covered by a protective barrier and a stronger gel applied in timed rounds. Custom take-home trays use a milder gel that you wear for a set time each day, usually over a couple of weeks. Some people start in the office and keep the shade up with trays later.

  • Event in a few weeks: there is usually time for a checkup and either method
  • Prefer fewer trips: take-home trays mean most of the work is done at home
  • Teeth often feel sensitive: a milder gel over more days may feel easier
  • Planning bonding or veneers too: whiten first, then match the new work to your shade

What whitening will not change

Whitening lightens natural enamel. It does not change crowns, veneers, bonding or fillings, and grey stains or a single dark tooth may respond slowly or unevenly. Results also fade over time, especially with coffee, tea, red wine and smoking. Your dentist will tell you what is realistic for your teeth before you decide.

Questions

How far ahead of a wedding should I start whitening?

Book your checkup a few weeks before, or earlier if you have not seen a dentist in a while. That leaves time for a cleaning or filling if one is needed, and a buffer if your teeth feel sensitive. Avoid starting a new whitening plan in the last few days.

How many times will I need to drive down from Newmarket?

Usually a checkup, then either one in-office visit or a fitting for your trays, then a shade check. If your exam shows treatment is needed first, that adds visits. We will tell you the plan before you start.

Is whitening covered by insurance or the CDCP?

Whitening is cosmetic, so most plans, the CDCP and the IFHP do not pay for it. Any checkup, cleaning or filling you need first may be covered, and we bill those directly. You get a written estimate before you begin.

Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?

Short-term sensitivity is common and usually fades within a few days. We can change the gel, shorten wear time or suggest a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Call us if it does not settle.

Can I use my trays again later for touch-ups?

Yes. Keep them in their case and bring them to your checkups. We will tell you how often a touch-up makes sense, so you do not overuse the gel.
