What Affects the Cost of Invisalign in Ontario?

By Aurora Gateway Dental Care · Published October 29, 2026 · Updated October 29, 2026 · Reviewed by our dentists

The short answer

Invisalign cost depends mostly on how much your teeth and bite need to move. That sets how many aligners you need, how long treatment lasts and how many check-ups are involved. Retainers, dental work needed first and your orthodontic coverage also matter. An exam and scan come before a written estimate.

How aligner treatment works, step by step

Clear aligners are a series of thin plastic trays made from a digital scan of your teeth. Each set moves your teeth a tiny amount. You usually switch to a new set about every week or two, as your dentist directs, and wear them for at least 22 hours a day.

Along the way, small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are often bonded to some teeth. They give the aligners something to grip. You also come in for check-ups to make sure your teeth are moving as planned. All of this is part of what you are paying for, not just the plastic.

What drives Invisalign cost the most

The biggest factor is the complexity of your case. Closing a small gap between two front teeth is a very different job from fixing crowding plus an overbite. The more movement needed, the more aligners and the more time it takes.

Things your dentist looks at include:

  • How crowded or spaced your teeth are
  • Whether your bite needs correcting, not just the look of your front teeth
  • Whether elastics or other add-ons are needed alongside the aligners
  • How many months of treatment are likely
  • Whether a mid-course set of extra aligners may be needed if some teeth lag behind

Your habits can change the outcome

Aligners only work while they are in your mouth. If they spend too much time in a case, teeth fall behind the plan. That can mean extra aligners and a longer treatment. Losing or breaking a set can also mean ordering a replacement.

Ask how your provider handles lost aligners and mid-course changes. Knowing this up front makes the invisalign price easier to compare with other offices.

Work that may be needed before you start

Aligners should go on healthy teeth and gums. If you have a cavity, gum inflammation or a lot of tartar, those are usually treated first. That care is billed separately and is often covered by regular dental plans in a different way than orthodontics.

Your dentist will also take records, such as X-rays, photos and a digital scan. Sometimes 3D imaging helps show the roots and bone. These records shape the plan and appear on your estimate.

Retainers are part of the real cost

When the last aligner comes out, teeth naturally want to drift back. The Ontario Dental Association says retainers need to be worn for life to hold the result. That means at least one retainer at the end of treatment, and replacements over the years as they wear out.

Some offices include the first retainer in the treatment fee and some list it separately. Check your estimate so you know which applies.

Fees, insurance and government programs

No two offices have to charge the same for aligners. Dentists set fees for their own practice, and the Ontario Dental Association suggested fee guide is a common reference point rather than a rule. Your insurer reimburses from its own schedule, which can leave a gap between the fee and what the plan pays.

Orthodontic coverage often works differently from the rest of a dental plan. Some plans have a separate lifetime maximum for orthodontics, some only cover children or students up to a certain age, and some don't include it at all. Payments may also be spread across the length of treatment.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) does not currently cover orthodontic services. Tooth straightening also falls outside the urgent care that the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) is designed for. A predetermination, where we send the plan to your insurer before you start, shows what your plan expects to pay.

Aligners, braces or no treatment?

Clear aligners are effective for many cases, but not every one. The American Association of Orthodontists notes that braces can treat most orthodontic problems, while aligner suitability depends on the case. Some bites move more predictably with braces.

For small concerns, your dentist may also talk about bonding or simply leaving things as they are. A good consultation compares options honestly, including what happens if you wait.

Asking for an aligner estimate in Aurora

If you live in Aurora or a nearby town, you can start with an exam and digital scan at Aurora Gateway Dental Care. Dr. Farhad Sobouti, DDS, MSc (Orthodontics), FRCDC, provides our orthodontic treatment and will explain whether aligners suit your bite. Your aligner plan comes with a written estimate before the first tray is ordered. We handle the insurance claim for you and walk through payment choices, including our student program if you're in school.

Questions

Is Invisalign the same as other clear aligners?

Invisalign is one brand of clear aligner. Other systems work on a similar idea. What matters more than the brand is a proper exam, a plan made by a dentist and regular check-ups during treatment.

Why do two people pay different amounts for aligners?

Their cases are different. One person may need a few months of minor movement. Another may need longer treatment to fix their bite. Records, retainers and any work done beforehand also vary from person to person.

Are mail-order aligners a way to save?

They skip the in-person exam and check-ups that catch problems such as gum disease or teeth moving the wrong way. If something goes wrong, fixing it can cost more than the savings. Talk to a dentist before choosing any aligner treatment.

Does my plan pay all at once?

Many plans pay orthodontic benefits in instalments over the course of treatment rather than in one lump sum. Your insurer can tell you how it works for your plan, and a predetermination makes it clearer.

What if I need more aligners partway through?

Sometimes teeth don't track exactly as planned and a new scan and extra aligners are needed. Ask whether this is included in your estimate or billed separately, so you know before you start.
