Dental Exams and X-Rays in Aurora

A dental exam is your dentist's careful look at your whole mouth. X-rays and photos fill in what the eye cannot see, so small problems are found while they are still small.

The short answer

A dental checkup at Aurora Gateway Dental in Aurora is an exam by your dentist of your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, with digital X-rays only when they will add useful information. Our intraoral camera lets you see close-ups on a screen. You leave knowing what is healthy, what to watch and what, if anything, needs care.

What it is

Not every exam is the same. A complete exam is the thorough first look, usually at your first visit with us or after a long gap. Your dentist charts every tooth, records your fillings and crowns, measures your gums and often takes a full set of X-rays to set a baseline. A routine or recall exam happens at your regular checkups and focuses on what has changed. A specific or emergency exam looks at one problem, such as a tooth that started hurting last night.

X-rays come in a few types. Bitewing X-rays show the crowns of your upper and lower back teeth together and are the main way to find decay between teeth. Periapical X-rays show a whole tooth from tip to root and the bone around it, which helps when a tooth aches or an infection is suspected. Your dentist will tell you which images they want and what they are looking for. We use digital X-rays, and the images appear on screen within moments.

The intraoral camera is a small wand that takes close-up photos inside your mouth. Your dentist can show you a cracked filling, a worn edge or a dark groove at a size you can actually see. Many people find it easier to make decisions once they have seen the problem for themselves.

If you are searching for a dental check up near me because you are new to Aurora, ask your previous dentist to send your recent X-rays and records. That can save you repeat images and gives your new dentist a history to compare against.

Benefits and risks

Benefits

  • Finds decay, gum changes and worn fillings before they hurt.
  • Digital X-rays show problems between teeth and below the gumline.
  • Camera images let you see what your dentist sees.
  • Your records build a picture over time, so slow changes stand out.

Risks and limits

  • Each dental X-ray gives only a very small radiation dose, and your dentist orders images only when they will change or confirm your care.
  • Some problems are not visible yet even with X-rays, so tell us about any change between visits.
  • Holding an X-ray sensor can trigger a gag reflex in some people. Tell us and we will adjust.
  • If you are or might be pregnant, let us know before any X-rays so your dentist can decide what is needed now.

Cost and coverage

Exam and X-ray fees are set per service, using the Ontario Dental Association fee guide. A complete exam with a full set of X-rays costs more than a routine recall exam, and each type of X-ray has its own fee. Most insurance plans cover exams and X-rays but limit how often, such as one full set of X-rays every few years. The Canadian Dental Care Plan lists exams and X-rays among its covered services, and we accept CDCP and IFHP and bill all insurance plans directly. Ask about our in-house dental plan and student program if you have no coverage. If you are unsure what your plan allows, we can check before your visit.

What shapes your estimate

  • Whether you need a complete, routine or emergency exam
  • How many and which X-rays are needed
  • Whether recent X-rays can be sent from your previous dentist
  • Your plan's limits on exams and X-rays each year

Questions

How long does a first exam take?

A first visit takes longer than a routine checkup, because your dentist is building a full record. When you book, our team can tell you what will happen so you can plan your day.

Can my old dentist send my X-rays?

Usually, yes. Ask your previous office to send recent X-rays and records, or give us their details and your consent so we can request them. Recent images may mean you need fewer new ones.

What does the intraoral camera show?

It shows close-up photos of your teeth and gums on a screen. You can see cracks, worn fillings, stains and gum changes clearly. The photos also become part of your record for comparing later.

Why do I need a full set of X-rays as a new patient?

A full set shows every tooth, root and the bone around them. It gives your dentist a starting point to compare against at future visits. If you have recent X-rays from another dentist, your dentist may not need to repeat them.

Do I have to start treatment right after my exam?

No. Your exam ends with a plan and an estimate. You can ask questions, check your coverage and decide when you are ready.

Can I bring my child to the same checkup appointment?

We see children from their very first visit. Tell our front desk who is coming when you book, and they will look for times that suit your family.
